The Chinese rapper shows his artistic evolution in multiple genres during his tour stop in Los Angeles
Welcome to Golden Dragon, a newsletter by Eric Diep about Asians in hip-hop and my takes on trending topics in AAPI pop culture. Golden Dragon is a rotation of interviews, reviews, news, critical perspectives, and random blogs about music I recommend.
Here’s What I’m Unleashing Today 🐲
Masiwei of Higher Brothers announced another U.S. leg of his 2024 “Dark Horse Season” world tour. I flew to L.A. and wrote a concert review for my first Golden Dragon press trip.
I last saw Masiwei in concert in 2019 at Irving Plaza in New York. The quartet Higher Brothers were teasing their solo albums back then, allowing each member to dedicate a portion of the show to themselves. Masiwei set himself apart through his passion for hip-hop. His dedication to the craft extends to adding his twist to styles widely known. The audience watched a transformation from the Higher Brothers’ de facto leader to a Chinese rapper finally stepping out on his own. The dormant dark horse was about to awaken.
